Ash Wednesday: A Prayer

The dust settles
beneath our feet

a silence, full of
grace and full of humanity,
makes the air feel
empty.

We are listening.

a wind, weaving its
way through our midst,
unsettles us,
unsettles the dust
unsettles our hearts

You speak.

We bring our own
words
Our grittiness
Our strengths
and the hubris that holds them up
Our weaknesses
and the sorrow that pushes them down

Our human-ness
Our dusty-ness
We bring to you.

We crawled out
of the ocean mud
Fillled the world
followed your call.

We return to you
We return to dust

Receive us
as we long to be whole
Receive us
in our repentance

Receive us.
The dust settles.
We approach.
