Belgrade 3

On my last night
my first Serbian snowfall

Trudging back home
through the city slush

The dark giving way
to the lights of the bars

where the rakia and
nicotine will warm you up

And is that a wedding
party I see taking

a smoke break on the stairs
as I trudge-launch my way

upward to the sidewalk
where men wrapped in orange

shovel a path for us all
our Iphones alight, brighter

than even the Billions and
Billions McDonald’s claims

piercing through a night
lit up by a city that knows

how to rebuild itself no
matter the enemy; whether

marauder, bomb or salesman
blocks the way back home
